The North Coast 500: What to See Along the Way

Plan a more thoughtful Highlands road trip, with room for the west coast, far north and the journey back to Inverness.

The North Coast 500 is a journey around the North Highlands, beginning and ending in Inverness. Its official route is 516 miles, but the distance on a map says little about the time you will want for viewpoints, villages, walks and weather. Allow at least five to seven days, and more if you want the journey to feel like a holiday rather than a drive.

Begin with a realistic pace

Set off from Inverness with a loose direction rather than a strict hour-by-hour schedule. Both clockwise and anti-clockwise journeys work. What matters is how many nights you can spare and which stretches deserve a full day. Long single-track sections and photo stops make ordinary driving estimates unreliable.

Choose a few overnight bases before adding attractions. If your trip is short, consider exploring part of the route well instead of racing around the whole circuit.

Give the west coast room

The western side is the stretch many travellers remember for the meeting of mountains, lochs and sea. Plan short walks and viewpoints, but avoid stacking several remote detours into one afternoon. Weather can change the view entirely, and the flexibility to pause is part of the appeal.

If you drive a larger vehicle, check the official route advice before selecting roads. Some narrow or steep sections have recommended alternatives; a route that suits a small car may not be right for a motorhome.

Cross the north without rushing

The far north feels different again: open horizons, small communities and a strong sense of distance. Use a day to explore a stretch on foot or spend time in a village rather than treating every stop as a photo from the car. Respect access signs, local residents and the fragile places that make the route special.

Food, fuel and accommodation can be spread farther apart than you expect. Check what is open ahead of time, especially outside the busiest season.

Return to Inverness

The eastern return has its own character and deserves more than the final drive home. Keep a night or two for it if you can. As the trip closes, note the places you would return to; the best version of this route often comes from choosing fewer stops more deliberately next time.

Best time to visit

The route can be travelled through the year, but daylight, weather and opening hours change the experience. Spring and early autumn are useful starting points; book well ahead for popular summer dates.

Practical tips

  • Use the official NC500 guidance for single-track roads and vehicle restrictions.
  • Book overnight stays ahead, especially in peak periods.
  • Carry layers and leave space in the plan for weather changes.
  • Fuel up before remote stretches and check opening hours before detours.
