North Cornwall Coast Road Trip

A relaxed four-day route from Newquay to Padstow, with beaches, cliff paths, fishing villages and time to stop along the way.

The best North Cornwall drive is not a race between famous stops. Give yourself four days between Newquay and Padstow and you can fit in short coast walks, unhurried lunches and the small places you notice on the way. This outline follows the coast north and then loops back towards the Camel Estuary; it is a starting point rather than a timetable.

Day one: Newquay to Tintagel

Start with a morning by the sea near Newquay. Pick one beach or headland rather than trying to cover the entire town; the pleasure here is leaving space to watch the surf and take a short walk. Then head north, breaking the drive for a viewpoint or lunch before reaching the Tintagel area.

If you hope to walk onto Trebarwith Strand, check the tide first. At higher water the broad sand disappears. An evening on the clifftop near Tintagel gives you a sense of the coast without needing to squeeze a long hike into your first day.

Day two: Tintagel, Rocky Valley and Boscastle

Give Tintagel its own morning. The coast path runs through dramatic, exposed scenery, so choose a distance that matches the weather and your group. Rocky Valley offers a different feel inland, while St Nectan's Glen is an optional woodland detour if you want to trade cliff views for trees and water.

Finish in Boscastle and leave time to wander the harbour. Its narrow setting is more rewarding at walking pace. If you plan a longer coastal section, check the path conditions and arrange your return transport before setting out rather than assuming an easy loop.

Day three: Port Isaac and the small stops

The stretch towards Port Isaac is a good day for fewer miles and more stops. Browse the village on foot, then choose a nearby cove, viewpoint or café instead of building a packed checklist. Small lanes can be slow in busy periods, so allow more driving time than a map suggests.

This is also a useful day to keep flexible. If the coast is windy, swap a cliff walk for a village afternoon. If the skies clear, linger outside and move dinner later.

Day four: Padstow and the Camel Estuary

End around Padstow with a walk beside the estuary or a slower morning in town. The area offers a gentler finish after the exposed north-coast cliffs. If you have extra time, take a short out-and-back coast path section rather than squeezing in another far-flung destination.

Before leaving, save the places you actually enjoyed and note the stops you would change next time. A road trip becomes much more useful when the route reflects the journey you took, not just the one you planned.

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn can offer pleasant walking conditions with more room to explore. Summer has longer days but busier roads and accommodation; winter needs shorter, weather-aware plans.

Practical tips

  • Check tide times before visiting Trebarwith Strand or crossing any beach.
  • Pack a windproof layer even when the inland forecast looks mild.
  • Book accommodation ahead in busy periods, and allow for slow coastal lanes.
  • Treat coast-path distances as estimates: climbs and weather matter more than mileage.
